The idea of the exhibition was developed around the collection of Roman glass, dating back to the Bronze Age to Medieval times held at the Museo Archeologico to which have been added two valuable and recently restored stained glass pieces from the city’s cathedral. This collection has then been combined with pieces from important private and public collections of antique, modern and contemporary glass from Italy and abroad.
Amongst the great glass workers, attention is drawn to Carlo Scarpa, Alfredo Barbini, Alvar Aalto, Flavio Poli, Stanislav LibensKy and Jaroslav, Dale Chihuly, Yoichi Ohira, Richard Meitner, Fulvio Bianconi, Napoleone Martinuzzi, Bertil Vallien, Lino Tagliapietra, Gaetano Pesce and Ettore Sottsass. Contemporary artists included for their specific work in glass are Arman, Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois, Nam Jun Paik, Daniel Spoerri, Wim Delvoye, Jaume Plensa, Chen Zhen, Giò Pomodoro and Gilberto Zorio.
The works interact with each other following a path made up of ten rooms organised by subject. Symbol and myth, nature and everyday life and many other themes alternate in a route which is made up of a series of different rooms; Stanza dell’Acqua (Water Room), Stanza della Natura (Nature Room), Stanza del Gioco (Play Room), Stanza della Geometria (Geometry Room), Stanza del Frammento (Fragment Room), Stanza dell’Oriente (Eastern Room), Stanza del Corpo (Body Room), Stanza del Sacro e del Profano (Sacred and Profane Room), Stanza del Quotidiano (Everyday Life Room) and the Stanza del Fantastico (Fantastic Room).
