Exhibiting design

The presentation of design has long been a subject for debate. The fact remains that so many different ways exist to create a historical overview of the products which form the basis for our everyday lives. The traditional way to present such objects is the museum, where exhibits from the field of design are frequently shown as works of art, taken out of their everyday context and put into weird and wonderful displays, placed behind glass, or ropes, complete with “please do not touch” signs. In the commercial world we can find out about the latest products on offer either through shops or trade fairs, here the visitor can not only look at the objects but also try them out. Today an abundance of material related to design can also be found on CD-ROM or by visiting virtual design museums on the internet meaning that wherever we are we can access information on important design developments.
