8th Designer’s Saturday in Langenthal

Once every two years, the small town of Langenthal becomes a major centre for design and interiors when it hosts the most important design related event in Switzerland. The idea for Designer’s Saturday was conceived in 1987 after an exhibition in New York presented design in the places where it was actually produced, rather than in trade fairs. This unusual exhibition which takes place in five factories which are connected by a shuttle bus service attracted around 10 000 visitors on the 4th and 5th of November. Taking part were 30 big name design companies: along with famous Swiss names such as création baumann, Ruckstuhl, USM and Vitra were Italian firms such as Alias, Cassina and B&B and from Scandinavia, Fritz Hansen, Kvadrat and Lammhults. Providing further inspiration was an exhibition of 27 young European designers entitled “Transparenz und Verdichtung” (transparency and compression).
