Claudia Comte’s optical patterns on show in Rome

After Desert X, where she built a giant wall filled with black and white lines, Claudia Comte goes to Italy with a broader show.

We saw her last Spring in the Coachella Valley during Desert X, with a gigantic site specific installation named Curves and Zigzags. Born in Switzerland in 1982, Claudia Comte now takes her abstract patterns to Basement Gallery in Rome. Her first solo exhibition in Italy is titled “La Ligne Claire”, curated by Samuel Leuenberger.

Claudia Comte, who lives both in Berlin and Grancy, seems to be obsessed by defined patterns. Their repetition becomes an optical illusion that shifts from two to three-dimensional. The artist leaves behind the rigueur of her historical predecessors and introduces new external elements, giving birth to visual short circuits. We are faced with a giant marble starfish (a living representation of geometry) and sausage-like cartoons, as a way to remind us of our unpredictable animal state. The overall effect is a dynamic and energetic work in progress, on show until the end of November.
