The MASI Lugano museum has opened “Calder. Sculpting Time”, the most comprehensive monographic exhibition dedicated to Alexander Calder by a Swiss public institution in the last fifty years.
The American sculptor Alexander Calder was among the most original artists of the 20th century. By introducing movement into a static art form such as sculpture, Calder extended this medium beyond the visual, into the temporal dimension. MASI Lugano has opened a major exhibition dedicated to him: “Calder. Sculpting Time”, the most comprehensive exhibition project by a Swiss public institution in the last fifty years.

"Calder. Sculpting Time" explores the profound and transformative impact of this revolutionary artist, outlining his development of a formal and sculptural language characterised by unprecedented innovation during the 1930s and 1940s.The exhibition, conceived as an open space, free of walls, offers the public the opportunity to admire works ranging from Calder's early abstractions or sphériques to a magnificent selection of more recent mobiles, stabiles and standing mobiles of various sizes. The exhibition will also feature a selection of constellations, a term proposed by Marcel Duchamp and James Johnson Sweeney for the artist's sculptures made of wood and wire in 1943.
Calder's legacy endures not only in the physical presence of his works, but also in the profound impact of his work, which changed the way we perceive and interact with sculpture. His contribution to art history extends far beyond the innovative use of materials and the employment of new techniques, capturing the subtle essence of fleeting moments.Confronting this temporal dimension is the aim of this exhibition,' say the exhibition's curators, Carmen Giménez and Ana Mingot Comenge.
