Luxury and sustainability: a resort in the Maldives

Preserving the natural context, reducing consumption of resources and energy, creating harmony with the landscape elements of the area: these are the main ambitions of Peia associati architectural studios for the Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort. Designed with a holistic approach to combine luxury and sustainability, the complex consists of 70 hospitality units (some on the island and others on the water), 9 public service buildings, and 16 staff facilities. The architects worked closely with environmental experts to develop solutions to combat coastal erosion, study ways to make the most of the winds and reduce energy consumption. The materials were chosen on the basis of sustainability criteria: the wood used for the piers, jetties and roofs comes from forest areas with rapid reforestation; natural materials obtained by mixing lime with pieces of dead wood and coral were used for the interiors. Casalgrande Padana's large porcelain stoneware slabs, used for floors and walls, are made exclusively from natural raw materials, free from plastics and glazes. Casalgrande Padana's products are durable and eco-compatible materials, perfect for the project's sustainability ambitions.

For the floors in the reception area and the spa, products from the Antique Wood collection were chosen, 15*120cm slabs with a wood effect painted white. For the restaurant areas, Grigio Maggia marble-effect stoneware surfaces from the Marte collection were employed. These large-size slabs (60*120cm) have a natural finish for indoor areas and a bush-hammered non-slip finish for outdoor areas. White Thassos from the Marte Collection is used for the floors of the rooms and for the interior of the swimming pools. In order to create visual continuity between the interior and exterior, it was decided to lay the ceramic slabs both on the floor and on the wall. Finally, the Marmoker collection, in the colour Statuario Grigio, was chosen to cover the inside of the shower. The ceramic surfaces were laid in an open-spot pattern and specially made in a mirrored version.
