Even if you’re not a fan of Elon Musk, you have to at least concede that his visual pop references are quite strong. The Starship, a re-usable spacecraft which Space X plans to use to bring humans to the Moon and Mars, could have looked like many of the company’s rockets, contemporary and hi-tech. Instead, Musk’s space designers went for a shiny silver look that wouldn’t be out of place in a sci-fi movie from the fifties.
The Starship is about 50m tall and it will carry a payload of up to 150 tons, including 100 tons of cargo. To get to orbit, the vessel will be propelled by a larger rocket, the Super Heavy.
“I think we should really do our best to become a multi-planet species”, said Musk during the a press conference held by Space X to unveil an update about the spacecraft. “We should do it now”. And, apparently, we should do it in style, hopping on a retro-style fat rocket.
