The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has recently completed the Endesa Pavilion, a self-sufficient solar prototype installed at the Marina Dock is Barcelona, within the framework of the Smart City Expo — World Congress, which will take place in November.

Over a period of one year, the pavilion will be used as control room for monitoring and testing several projects related to intelligent power management. The striking structure is also the prototype of a multi-scale construction system. Its modular component façade is composed of elements such as solar brick, solar protection, insulation, ventilation, lighting. A parametric logic adapts façade geometries to the specific environmental requirements of a building's specific areas.

Based in the 22nd district of Barcelona, IAAC is a platform for the exchange of knowledge with faculty and students from over 25 countries, including USA, China. India, Poland, Italy, Mexico and Sudan. Students work simultaneously on multiple scales (city, building, manufacturing) and in different areas of expertise (ecology, energy, digital manufacturing, new technologies), pursuing their own lines of enquiry on the way to developing an integrated set of skills with which to act effectively in their home country or globally.
