The Lisbon Architecture Triennal announces the appointment of Beatrice Galilee as its
next Chief Curator. The 3rd edition will take place between October 2013 and January
2014 in the city of Lisbon–including satellite events in the city of Porto and an
international venue.
Galilee, a London-based curator, writer, critic and lecturer of contemporary
architecture and design, is the successful candidate of an international Open Call
launched in Spring this year. The Triennale received an exceptional calibre of
applications and proposals from around the world with extremely high standards of
critical intelligence and originality.
The jury, including Domus Editor-in-chief Joseph Grima, Beatriz Colomina (Professor of
Architecture and Chair of the Ph.D. programme at the School of Architecture and
Founding Director of the Program in Media and Modernity, Princeton University), José
Mateus (President of Lisbon Architecture Triennale Association), Delfim Sardo (Critic,
Curator and Chief Curator of the 2nd edition) and Manuel Henriques (Executive Director
of Lisbon Architecture Triennale) was unanimously convinced that Galilee's proposal
and profile stood out as exceptional in the context of the Triennale's proposed
objectives.
Galilee is the co-founder and director of The Gopher Hole, an exhibition and event space
in London, and has been involved in several international curatorial projects, including
curator at 2011 Gwangju Design Biennale in Korea, directed by Ai Wei Wei and Seung
H-Sang and curator at 2009 Shenzhen Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale in China directed by
Ou Ning.
Two years before the event, Galilee will start working alongside the team of the Lisbon
Architecture Triennale and the invited international co-curators on the concept for
2013. Under the objectives of examining plurality in contemporary spatial practice, the
team will conceive exhibitions, publications, conferences, events, workshops, national
and international competitions both for students and professionals as well as establish
an international platform for the Triennale and Portuguese Architecture.
Beatrice Galilee, born in 1982 in London, was trained
in Architecture at Bath University, and in History of
Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture,
UCL, Beatrice specialises in the dissemination of
architecture through media, curatorial practice,
research, editing and teaching. She is the co-founder
and director of The Gopher Hole, an exhibition and
event space in London, and freelance writer and
associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of
Art and Design.
She was curator at the critically acclaimed 2011
Gwangju Design Biennale in Korea, directed by Ai Wei
Wei and Seung H-Sang.
In 2009 Beatrice was invited to work in Beijing as European Curator of the 2009
Shenzhen Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, directed by Ou
Ning and also to work as a curator at Shao Foundation.
