The sensitivity they brought along to the construction industry has changed our vision of the world. This is why, this issue of Domus México, América Central y el Caribe is devoted to these iconic women as an inspiration driver of the 21st century.

In this issue, we present Salvadoran architect Eva Hinds’ project called Cardedeu. This work has been awarded the 2012 Ibero-American Design Biennial prize. Her project is a perfect combination of architecture and gardens within a mountain landscape, history, art and nature.

Besides, after 100 years of the Panama Canal building, architect Gladys Turner – who has been involved in cultural heritage management projects – offers a retrospective of the great impact it has had on the merchant shipping sector and its contribution as a oceanic hub. 

Furthermore, the Centro Cultural Elena Garro lead by architect Fernanda Canales is also present in this edition. For this project, a residential house – a cataloged property from the early 1900s – located on Fernández Leal street, in Coyoacán, was refurbished and adapted to serve as the venue of the Center. The need to preserve the existing building impacted on the decision of highlighting the new purposes while respecting the original shell.
