“The biggest compliment for me is when
someone smiles while looking at my
designs,” says Richard Hutten, Dutch
designer and leading exponent of the
Droog collective who lives and works in
Rotterdam.
Looking at his products it’s
easy to understand why. They are ironic,
often surprising objects like the cup Dumbo
with handles in the shape of sticking-out
ears (above), produced in a limited edition
of 100,000. But these very likeable designs
are also invented to carry out their function
intelligently, such as the Table-upon-table
bar stool made of two tables stacked on
top of each other, one of which can be used
as a stool when necessary.
The Kunsthal in
Rotterdam is dedicating an extensive
retrospective to Hutten (until October 7),
illustrating both his early designs and more
recent projects, such as the collection of
silver for Christofle and the interiors of a
building by Dutch practice MVRDV. E.S.
