Icon: seating with a transversal character

The Italian company Mara, with the creative contribution of Marcello Ziliani, presents a proposal that is original in its simplicity, highly innovative in its design, and versatile in its use.

One of the most interesting trends in the field of interior design concerns the evolution of office spaces: innovative models are being experimented with for a substantially changing corporate culture, multifunctional spaces, hybridisations between physical and virtual, and between work and leisure.

It is no coincidence that Domus has activated an ad-hoc space for reflection on the subject, the Modern Work section, which attempts to analyse these changes from different points of view, involving professionals, companies and institutions. This trend leads designers to think of ambiguous, unpredictable and surprising spaces and furnishings that respond to complex contemporary needs.

Mara's new Icon collection, a line of upholstered seats with removable covers, goes in this direction. Like a fil rouge, it connects different areas of use and distinct types of furniture in a single product.

Icon was ideally conceived to complement in a synergetic and fluid way Mara's wide range of tables, characterised by movements and patented systems that make them space-saving and adjustable in height. Its open and dynamic nature makes it ideal for any furnishing environment and architectural space, thanks to its structural comfort and sober, elegant appeal.

Seatings are marked by a refined aesthetic, akin to home furnishings, but adopting cutting-edge technology that draws directly from the working space. Icon expands the company's furnishing boundaries, embracing residential, hospitality, office, and more.

La collezione ha un’indole classica ma allo stesso tempo sicura e audace: its defining clear lines, its receding armrest that looks backwards and its upward rising edge are representative of this. The minimalist expression is, however, encapsulated in its extreme comfort, thanks to a large, soft cushioning (made of moulded foam) and, above all, thanks to the movement of the backrest, which is detached from the seat. Icon, in fact, although it is a typical cockpit seat, is not monocoque: deliberately the seat and backrest have been made separately so as to guarantee independent movement.

Marcello Ziliani and Mara's R&D team have worked carefully to conceal the mechanisms that generate the seat and backrest movements while maintaining a clean, essential design that is destined to last.
