Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog sculpture broken by fairgoer: it was worth $42,000

In Miami, during the VIP preview of the Art Wynwood fair, a visitor knocked over the sculpture, which has fallen under the astonished eyes of those present.

It doesn’t seem real, but on Thursday one of the famous Ballon Dogs by Jeff Koons fell from its transparent support, shattering into at least a hundred pieces. The scene was so absurd that some of those present at the fair – Art Wynwood, Miami – were convinced it was a kind of performance, a perfectly orchestrated happening arranged by the organizers.

Perhaps, the visitor who tried to touch the artwork, believed it was actually made of latex, but it was not: the kitsch sculptures that made Koons famous with his criticism of the American consumer lifestyle, are made of porcelain. This particular sculpture – a shiny electric blue dog, about 16 inches tall and 19 inches long – was worth $42,000.
