Dramatized by the Grass Mirror, the vegetation slides
along the wall like a waterfall or climbs towards the
ceiling, casting reflections on the sides of the boxes,
recalling the shimmering effect of the water in a river bed.
The carefully thought out form of the object, which
introduces an optical phenomenon of distortion, an addition
to the mirror effect, turns it into a constantly evolving
work, full of freshness, which dresses the wall like a living
portrait.
Designed by architect Jean-Jacques Hubert, the Grass
Mirror belongs to the “Cultivated Furniture” collection
edited by the Compagnie. This collection’s firm intention is
to make up for the lack of greenery we all suffer from in
our city lives, by introducing vegetation in the heart of our
apartments.
One fact is sure: plants are good for our health! Their
presence in our life spaces purifies the air and heals the
senses – and yet Parisians only benefit from 2.5 square
meters of public garden per inhabitant! The strong idea
behind the Grass Mirror is to introduce vegetation easily,
on a surface that has only too little been used for this
purpose: the walls. The plants can thereby regain their
rights in spaces where they had been banned, in the office
or at home, without stealing the place of the furniture.
Every box is independent. The user is therefore free to
determine the number of boxes he or she wishes, in order
to obtain a square of vegetation of the required dimension.
Jean-Jacques Hubert is a practicing architect since 1999;
he collaborated with Jacob + Macfarlane then Bernard
Tschumi until 2007. He has been teaching architecture at
the ESAT since 2006. He founded the H20 architecture firm
in 2005 with Charlotte Hubert; they were nominated in
2008 for the promising young architect competition
organised by the French Ministry for Culture. Antoine
Santiard then joined the agency. They have recently been
listed in the Wallpaper magazine “World Architects
Directory 2009” (photos by Nathalie Jouan).
