When in 1993 the Germany Dairy association went knocking at the door of a glass factory in the Sauerland and asked it to design a special milk glass, no one had the slightest inkling what an inspiration the white of the milk would provide as a canvas for artists, designers and architects from all over the world. The design agency Sieger Design had the brilliant marketing notion of asking famous designers to send in their ideas; as a result the glass became a sales hit and a collector’s item, while attracting numerous awards.
This concept became the trade-mark of all the subsequent Ritzenhoff collections, and it is what is now behind the charm of the Designer’s Bears. Artists and designers such as Alessandro Mendini, Tassilo von Grolman and Anna Gili have taken the soft toys and either printed them in bright colours all over, provided them with dragon’s teeth or crowned them.
The Simsalabim decorative counterpanes, reminiscent of oriental carpets, and the new designs for the bed-linen collection “Belle de nuit” are the stuff that dreams are made on. As for the daytime, the inviting cushions of the “Sofa Family” and the “My Darling” coffee cups, decorated with personal faces promise a cosy time. And anyone who needs cheering up when casting an eye on the clock can choose between the witty colourful decors of the “time in motion” wristwatch series.
