Kelley, one of the most celebrated contemporary American artists along with Andy Warhol, has been for 30 years first in line in representing the dark side of the American way of life. “Educational Complex Onwards: 1995-2008” is the title of the exhibition and also the title of one of his most famous works, a large model (shown for the first time at Metro Pictures in 1995) representing the various schools that the artist attended. This great provoker of the 20th century has been able to combine punk spirit with literature and art history, pop and youth culture, and his autobiography and memories (as well as his youth and education) represent the underlying themes of the works chosen for the exhibition, produced by the Wiels Centre of Contemporary Art and curated by Anne Pontégnie.
