I can remember some things from before I was five. My parents say many of these memories are made up, but I am quite certain I saw a lady and her son running over a cloud under the wing of the airplane we were flying in on our way to Huatulco.

I often used to look at myself in a big mirror and would move quickly, expecting my reflection to stand still. For a long time I believed that mirrors were another dimension that we could somehow access. I definitely didn’t have any existential conflicts at the age of four, but I would have loved it if my reflection had responded by moving in a different way.

The great thing about the imagination is that you don’t need to stay within certain parameters, nor do you have to stick to what people say is right or normal. In the end, we try so hard to be extravagant that we end up the same as everyone else.

Despite the universal fear of being consumed by the humdrum, I sometimes like to remember that family in the clouds or to look into mirrors, hoping for a surprise. Óscar Rodríguez (@matildamanzana), graphic designer and musician
