“Drawn by a lightning”: the transformation of a Catalan house

Studio h3o architects renovated a former barn on the outskirts of Barcelona by using the figure of lightning to generate broken lines and unusual spaces.

"We used the incredible story of a lightning striking the house years ago as a starting point for this project" : designed by Barcelona-based h3o architects, Relámpago House is an unusual and lively flat.

The renovation of a 55 m2 former barn with a gabled roof, located in a traditional Catalan farmhouse on the outskirts of the city, in the Sant Just district, has shaped a dynamic place distinguished by vibrant colours. Green, yellow, red and blue emerge in a pure white-painted space in which original elements such as Catalan ceiling vaults can be glimpsed.

Breaking away from tradition and referring to the arts in every aspect, the interior design was developed from the figure of lightning – Relámpago is in fact the Spanish word for this natural phenomenon. A figure that not only becomes a partition and a lamp, but also serves to divide and shape spaces, distinguished by fantasy, colours and fluidity.

The spatial layout could only be zigzag: a morphology of lines and angular geometries flow and merge together, producing an immersive visual effect. The choice of colours, on the other hand, is strategic because if on the one hand it emphasises volumes, on the other hand it distinguishes and identifies spaces, by involvong the user’s perception in the identification process.
