Pink arena by SO – IL Pavilion

In the centre of Beijing, surrounded by the monochrome stripes of a Riken Yamamto development, the glittering arena is part of the bi-annual "Get It Louder" Festival.

The theme of this year's event, directed by Chinese artist and curator Ou Ning, is 'Sharism'. "It has to do with everything online being available, the concept of copyright-free everything," explains architect Florian Idenburg. "Our pavilion for PS1 in a way dealt with a lot of the same issues - finding new ways of collaborating and interacting with virtual world."

Their project is named 'Flockr' as a parody of the photo-sharing website Flickr. It's a flexible space for lectures, screenings, events to take place over the festival, then it will be packed up and moved to Shanghai in October. "The pavilion will be used in multiple locations, so we wanted in some way to incorporate the different contexts into the appearance of the project, hence our selection of reflection." Says Idenburg. "The idea of "sharism" is in a way reflected in the multiple flickering / shimmering /vibrating panels. What is discussed inside is a fragmented reflection of our environment .. seen through a pink lens!"

SO IL's selection of pink was as spontaneous as every other aspect of the project admits Idenburg. "The contractor send us a sheet with colors to choose from. Red was not possible (Nouvel); green too cliché so we chose three that were in a family of colors and the next day it was installed! It is a super temporal materialization of a secret fantasy. It is pop and very contextual." Beatrice Galilee
