Jamie Hladky: 1,864km

“1,864km” is a project developed by Australian-based photographer Jamie Hladky driving or walking through the small towns of New South Wales, Australia.

Jamie Hladky: 1,864km
The photos of “1,864km” were taken during road trips and long walks through many of the small towns located between Canberra and the inland Orana and Riverina regions of New South Wales, Australia, throughout September 2013.
These sparsely populated towns are dusty, hot, and so quiet as to be almost silent. In many places the streets are deserted, and abandoned buildings are freely accessible. After living in large cities all of his life it still amazes Hladky that you can sometimes wander in and out of an entire town without encountering another soul. During occasional infrequent encounters with locals, stories are always shared, invariably opening with puzzlement at the presence of an outsider.
1,864 km was the distance covered by Hladky’s Mitsubishi Magna for this project.

Originally from Manchester, UK, Jamie Hladky has lived and worked in London and Singapore, and been lucky enough to travel fairly widely. Living and travelling away from home for so long means developing a new set of visual understandings, and he has tried to do this through exploration and photography.

Hladky is now based in Canberra, Australia, spending his time trying to see as much of this huge strange country as possible.
