Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg

A stadium-talisman for the first World Cup Final held in Africa.

The Soccer City Stadium is located in Nasrec, a suburb halfway between Soweto and downtown Johannesburg. North of a major transportation interchange, the stadium is served by a public walkway that connects it with a trade fair complex: the Johannesburg Expo Centre. Built in 1987 to serve the community of Soweto, it was originally called the First National Bank Stadium. Between 2007 and 2010, it was completely renovated and enlarged to accommodate the World Cup football tournament.
With the architectural mechanism that symbolises an African calabash, Soweto, the city of blacks, offers the global village an irrational presence. Agile and pragmatic, but also inspired, the designers favoured this interpretation and enclosed the football pitch with a texture whose colours are reminiscent of the earth.
