Amunátegui Valdés designed a commercial but house-shaped building in Gerónimo de Alderete, Chile, which establishes formal dialogues with the surrounding constructions.
The building was conceived so as to allocate four different shops with full street exposure, without necessarily neglecting the residential character of the district.
Whereas the house-shaped building establishes formal dialogues with the surrounding constructions, the apparent simplicity of the design has allowed to focus with more intensity on the internal relations of the program vis-à-vis de street: these are two buildings that have been integrated by means of a horizontal bar that projects towards the end of the site, and which contains a stairway leading from the street to the second level shops, as well as services for the lower floor spaces.
As shown in the plan, this central bar has been extended until the very end, decomposing the site in two lots. What was formerly the site of a single family house is now a house-like construction comprised of two buildings hosting four different activities that will potentially increase the encounters and engagements between shop owners, clientele and passers-by.
