Vienna Design Week 2016
The tenth edition of the festival takes place between 30 September and 9 October 2016 with around 150 events. In addition, the anniversary year is offering a whole array of extra activities at home and abroad: a joint event with the Diagonale – Festival of Austrian Film at the Designmonth Graz, a Vienna Design Week exhibition in the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, and a design appearance together with the ADN – Austria Design Net at this year’s Design Biennale London and at the World Design Capital in Taipei.

This year the Vienna Design Week presents two entirely new formats: a thematic focus onto graphic design, while the program element of industrial design addresses the challenges and competencies in solving problems in this sphere and a focus on the theme of architecture is taking up more room year by year in the festival program. Events and festival contributions on and in sites that reflect the beginnings and early editions of the Vienna Design Week are likewise part of the program in the Hofmobiliendepot (Imperial Furniture Collection), the Wiener Silber Manufactur. The MAK and the University of Applied Arts Vienna, that are part of VDW from the very beginning, are throwing their own special birthday party for the tenth anniversary.

The tenth is being sweetened with plenty of sugar – eye candy too: this year’s festival graphic design and campaign span an arc from traditional handicraft to the latest technologies. The next festival headquarters in the former Bothe & Ehrmann exhibition halls on Schlossgasse served as starting point for the photographs and collages produced by the partnership between art director Christof Nardin and photographer Markus Guschelbauer. The venue offers numerous locations that reflect the festival’s heterogeneousness and zestfully interact with the festival’s design concept. The digitally modeled, hyper-real “10” turning up again in the anniversary logo also links the old and the new.
Designers who have decisively shaped the festival in past years created also a visual accompaniment to the anniversary. Their individual contributions will be presented in the course of the anniversary year via our channels. Starting from Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler of mischer‘traxler design studio; with contributions by the Swiss design studio BIG-GAME, the designer Robert Stadler as well as Robert Rüf.
A comprehensive publication with an impressive line-up from the who’s who of the international design scene and with compiled highlights of ten years of the Vienna Design Week is also being published as part of the anniversary year. The publication includes the results of a study commissioned by the VDW addressing the quantitative, qualitative and permanent impact of the festival on the design location of Vienna.

The festival directed by Lilli Hollein fosters a new awareness of design and envisages this not only in its aesthetic function but especially as a profound and elemental component of our everyday life. In autumn we are therefore looking forward to a great number of different items in the form of exhibitions, workshops, participatory projects, talks, collaborations and guided tours throughout Vienna. The VDW can boast of its ability to bridge the gap between the specialist and the broad-based public. It will present national and international projects, positions, formation and production processes, also experimental approaches in architecture, graphics, and design in all fields – product, furniture, and social design. Most contributions are being produced on commission of the festival.
