Mendini for Caimi Brevetti

#105 Caimi continues to explore acoustic spatial design with Diesis and Bemolle, resolved in a play of volumes and the Snowsound-Fiber technology. #salone2015

For their first working experience with Caimi Brevetti, Alessandro and Francesco Mendini adopted a brand-new fabric to design two sound-absorbing objects with shiny black steel self-supporting structures.

The fabric – which Alessandro Mendini ironically calls “miraculous and mysterious” – is formed of soft polyester fibres with silver ions and exploits innovative Snowsound-Fiber technology to absorb sound. The interaction between the special acoustic fibres (which are also fire-resistant and bacteriostatic) and the special conformation of the components is the key to reducing acoustic reverberation in the environment.

The Mendini brothers developed their designs around these technical features. “We were asked to work with a fabric that had to hang, a fabric capable of absorbing sound, on the basis of specific curved radiuses”, explains Alessandro Mendini. “This curve – a sort of amoeba, which features in my language – complies with precise measurements so that this draping fabric and the form offer the maximum sound-absorption efficiency.”
