Paul Timmer: Wooden Bike

Paul Timmer, Amsterdam based designer and woodworker, finished to build this super engineered wooden bike, that weighs in at only 11 kg.

Paul Timmer: Wooden Bike
The wooden bike conceived by Paul Timmer is made from solid ash.
The frame is built completely from the ground up, without any standard parts. Unlike other wooden frames, the headset and dropouts are designed with the frame, instead of usage of standard frame-builder parts. The custom non-wooden parts are 3D printed aluminium.

The main advantage of the wooden frame, is the exceptional comfort. All vibrations, due to bumps in the road, are instantly absorbed by the wooden frame.

On the other hand, the mainstream altitude towards wood as a construction material is not shared by Paul Timmer. “I don’t use wood for some kind of temporary solutions, wood is the best construction material available. It is the only construction material made by mother earth. This bike can be as strong as a steel one. But it has to be designed better than a steel bike. As always, the challenges are in the details.”
