London-based creative studio Flat-e have created the interactive set for musician Jamie Lidell's latest promo music video You Naked. The video has been directed and edited with no post-production effects, displaying stunning in-camera lighting effects and real time projections.
In the video, Lidell performs in a darkened environment, inside a large cube, upon which several geometric visuals are projected. Flat-e developed a projection app that allowed the room to shift and blend into multiple environments, all generated in real time on the day of the shoot.
During his performance, Lidell affects the orientation and depth of the environment with a microphone stand that reacts to motion. "When Jamie tilts the mic left the horizon line tilts left," explain Flat-e, "and when he pushes it towards the camera he appears to move through his environment."
This interactive set will be used in Lidell's next concerts, and is part of the campaign for the launch of the artist's next album. Fully conceived by Flat-e, the campaign includes the design of the album artwork, video teasers, live show visuals and even Lidell's costume.
During the upcoming concerts, the projection mapped cube will be used, morphing and changing in real time under Lidell's control, filled with graphics inspired by optical illusions and dazzle patterns. "The real time visuals themselves are coded in openFrameworks, using OpenGL and GLSL," state Flat-e, pointing out how these are "the same graphics libraries used to code most computer games nowadays."
