Cutting-edge research and innovation have always been the cornerstones of the antoniolupi company’s production. In recent years, its range has been enriched with unique, unusual pieces.
Currently, antoniolupi is presenting an amazing line of artistic products crafted from white Carrara marble, an ancient and versatile stone, interpreted along the lines of the company’s design philosophy by a group of designers who modelled and reinvented it to create objects with a decidedly contemporary soul.

The perfection of the cut and the mechanical milling reveal the material’s essence by combining perfect surfaces and linear geometry.

This single venerable material, undressed of its classical nature and forwarded to the future, maintains the unmistakable allure given by its materiality and intrinsic pureness. It is imbued with the flair, talent and sensitivity of the artists who skilfully interpreted it in symbiosis with the company’s spirit.

The idea for this washbasin derives from the observation of the rough-hewing of marble sculptures, where the three-dimensional shape of the sculpture is traced out in a series of cuts at different depths by means of a diamond disc guided by a numerically controlled machine. The concept of the internal core seen in Ulian’s designs is an idea that he has experimented with since the beginning of his work for antoniolupi.

The core can remain hidden and offer only a glimpse of its existence in the play of light, or it can be gradually revealed by breaking off the edges of the blades. When the block is hewn, the thin blades of marble formed by the cutting are broken with a mallet so as to make the rough sculpture that has taken shape inside emerge.

The same process is used to make the Introverso washbasin from a single block of white Carrara marble. Here, the gaps between the cuts allow for a view of a differently shaped core that can be left concealed or made visible by breaking the edges partially or completely with a hammer. In the latter case, the newly emerged form will be characterised by a surface texture created by the breaking of the marble sheets. The serial slicing technique offers a physical and visual lightening of the sink.

Stroking the blades of marble with your fingers or another object creates a soft, natural music originating in the heart of the stone and the special machining it has undergone.

The emotive content of this new project is the continuation of antoniolupi’s quest for beauty and elegance in design that goes beyond time and space. It is functional, harmonious, novel and at the same time it maintains unmistakable identity.
