Light Link: young artists from Russia and Belarus

With a long Soviet history behind them and a young and stimulating artistic future ahead, the cities of Minsk, Novosibirsk and Vladivostok have come to the attention of two curators, Joseph Grima and Iolanda Pensa, who have scrutinised contemporary art from Russia and Bielorussia and come up with a selection of five artists. So what do they have in common? They are all digital works, ‘light’ as reflected in the title of the exhibition due to open on Monday in Milan.

Light also in terms of language, despite their varied approaches; from the harsh comedy of the Blue Noses from Siberia (who have made a video of a fashion show featuring Siberian woodsmen in the streets of Novosibirsk) to the multi-disciplinary approach of Drum Ecstasy from Bielorussia. And whilst Katya Kandyba describes the far east of Russian with an ironic installation of old socks, the relics of a badly off past, Minsk duo Tsesler & Voichenko use a language made up of quotes and advertising to generate a series of digital posters. Finally, Andrey Savitsky, also from Minsk, uses and observes photography, video, sounds and computers, displaying their weakness and fragility. E.S.
