Gormley’s figures invade the Baltic in Gateshead

As from 17 May, three floors of the Baltic in Gateshead have been invaded by hundreds of metal figures. “Domain Field”, is the latest invention by UK artist Antony Gormley who in the creation of his unique sculptures, involved 240 volunteers, men and women aged from 2 to 85 years. Using casts of their bodies he made plaster moulds from which the metal sculptures were created. “They have been welded together to create ‘T’ patterns to create what I call a random matrix within the volume of the mould of each person”, he explained to the BBC.

The models will find it difficult to recognise themselves in the figures which seem to look all the same. The sculptor however maintains that their help was invaluable. “What I think these works do is they abstract from the body the attitude that life writes a story in the language of our bodies, which is the language before spoken language and that attitude is what I have abstracted from blood, skin, bone and muscle and it is presented in a completely new way”.
