Parallel Nippon
The exhibition “Parallel Nippon”,
hosted by the Urban Center in Milan
from 14 to 28 November, casts light
on Japan’s socio-cultural evolution
in the context of architectural works
realised in the ten-year period from
1996 to 2006.
These were years of
structural change that saw an economic
transition from the “speculative
bubble” to “post-bubble”
depression, in which urban politics
imprinted with a vision of the city in
expansion gave way to a model of
the city as a place of continuity. The
architecture of Isozaki, Ando, Ito,
Ban, Sejima, Fujimoto and Igarashi is
presented with a broader interpretation
and considered alongside such
themes as finance and the real-estate
market, cultural politics and territorial
governance, technical development
and information networks. E.S.
