Ryugyong Hotel Call for Ideas: Update

Architecture

More than 200 architects, designers, artists, engineers, university students and researchers from all over the world sent their “architectural and geopolitical” ideas and designs to Domus regarding the completion and functional redefinition of the huge abandoned concrete pyramid of the Ryugyong Hotel at Pyongyang, capital of North Korea (see Domus 882 June 2005).

The call for ideas launched by Domus in collaboration with the Department of Architecture and Society at the Politecnico in Milan, generated heterogeneous and radical solutions presented using a wide range of techniques (video, drawing, writing, collage, photomontage and art installation). As from the end of December, a virtual gallery of designs for the Ryugyong Hotel will appear on www.domusweb.it
In the January issue of Domus a selection of the most interesting proposals will be published. Over the course of the next year, the projects will then be shown in an itinerant exhibition.
