Mies van der Rohe award to Zaha Hadid

A routine commission such as a car park for 700 cars and a bus terminal in the hands of Hadid becomes an opportunity to redesign a piece of urban landscape. And such was the case for the Hoeinheim car park and terminal in Strasbourg, recent winner of the Mies van der Rohe Award for contemporary architecture, an award given every two years since 1987 by the European Union together with the Catalan Mies van der Rohe Foundation.

The demonstration that even a ‘minor’ project such as this one assigned to the Iraqi born architect who today is to receive the award, can lead to something which is anything but second class. “A space of great intensity created from an apparently simple opportunity” is how it was described by the international jury of experts and professionals lead by David Chipperfield, who from 269 submissions selected 41 finalists. A special mention was given to up and coming Berlin architect Jürgen Mayer H., born in 1965 who designed the Ostfildern council building near Stuttgart.
