You can design with wood without touching a tree. With this radical approach, CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota have designed a project for the Saviola Group that recounts the possibilities of new lives for wood.

“The Wood without the Tree” is the title of the project that visually recounts the infinite regenerative possibilities of Pannello Ecologico®, the absolute protagonist of Saviola's production as wood that has been regenerated (since the 1990s) without cutting down trees. In the installation the Pannello Ecologico® becomes a structural element used to build the entire stand, without the need to add other materials. In this way, the versatility of the product, the technologies adopted for its realisation and the quality of the Made in Italy design are represented.

But there is more. The project is inspired in form and architecture by an iconic element of international design: the "Artichoke lamp by Louis Poulsen. The Pannello Ecologico® composes each individual petal of the stand thanks to an interlocking system: over 100 double-sided panels (54 horizontal to recall the shape of petals, another 60 rectangles give shape to the entire stand) displaying in turn the rich variety of decors and finishes from the Saviola catalogue.

The structure creates a magic of light and colour, showing the countless facets of Saviola product design, telling visitors a circular story. For the construction of the stand, 39 cubic metres of regenerated wood were used, corresponding to 89 trees that were not felled. At the end of the exhibition, the wood will return to the circular chain, to be recovered and give life to new products and contribute to the environmental achievements that have always been part of the Saviola production cycle.
