Design in Istanbul

Opening 13 October, the first edition of the Istanbul Design Biennial hosts, under the theme of "Imperfection", over 100 projects by nearly 300 designers and architects, in two main exhibitions curated by Emre Arolat and Joseph Grima.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, the institution launches the 1st Istanbul Design Biennial, which will take place from 13 October 2012. Covering the fields of urban design, architecture, industrial, graphic, fashion and new media design, alongside relevant creative products and projects, the Biennial hosts, under the theme of "Imperfection", over 100 projects by nearly 300 designers and architects from 46 countries, in two main exhibitions curated by Emre Arolat and Joseph Grima.

"In this first Istanbul Design Biennial which we have been preparing for since 2010, we aimed at organising an event that would encompass not only design, but all related creative industries that have gained momentum all over the world in recent years," stated IKSV Chairman Bülent Eczacibasi. "Aiming to treat design as a cultural element and examine it from different angles, as well as, think about it anew and urge others to do the same, we wanted to approach the field from the unique perspective of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. (...) Like all other events organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, we hope that the Istanbul Design Biennial will be a successful one that will enrich its discipline, promote the country's contemporary cultural production in the international arena and provide audiences in Istanbul an opportunity to examine diverse trends and practices from all over the world.'

The first Istanbul Design Biennial has adopted the theme "Imperfection" at the suggestion of Deyan Sudjic, member of its Advisory Board and Director of Design Museum in London. In his text on the first Istanbul Design Biennial theme, Deyan Sudjic stated that there is nowhere better to explore it than in Istanbul, a city of infinite layers, charged with the vitality that comes from engaging with rapid urban, social and cultural change. Sudjic also highlighted that Istanbul as a city, is far from perfect, yet it is one of the most exhilarating and dynamic centres in the world. Its special quality is that it makes so much from the imperfect, the inexact and the provisional. The theme "Imperfection" of the Istanbul Design Biennial will both celebrate Istanbul's distinctive creative qualities and encapsulate a wider discussion about the nature of design in the contemporary world. It will tell the world something about Istanbul and offer the world a sharp insight into the nature of contemporary design. Imperfection is a new take on old ideas, and at the 1st Istanbul Design Biennial, it is interpreted from two different perspectives, in Musibet and Adhocracy.

Curated by Emre Arolat, Musibet congregates more than 30 projects of 165 designers and architects, displaying multiple faces of grand transformations continuously being realized in Istanbul, as well as in other geographies. The exhibition that aims to question the self-styled-marvellous legitimacy of the arguments of design activities in this context, will take place in Istanbul Modern in the 1,400 square metres venue designed by EAA-Emre Arolat Architects.

Emre Arolat organised the curatorial framework of the exhibition under two headlines. Under the first headline, "Transformation", Arolat will question urban transformation and social housing projects, which have been discussed lately in Istanbul, and the social tension due these projects while comparing them to other sample cities. Under the other headline, "Anti-Context", the parallels in the thoughts of local and global actors on a geographical scale with Istanbul on the centre, universal consent, the changes in new technologies, architectural and fashion design practices of the new world will be debated.

The Adhocracy exhibition, curated by Joseph Grima in collaboration with Elian Stefa, Ethel Baraona Pohl, and Pelin Tan, is hosted in the Galata Greek Primary School's 2,300 square metres. Reuniting over 60 projects by 120 designers, architects, Adhocracy surveys the contemporary design scene in the wake of a wave of social and technological revolutions that have transformed the realm of design in recent years.

Considering the Istanbul Design Biennial as a laboratory rather than an exhibition platform, Adhocracy argues that rather than in finished products, the maximum expression of design today is to be found in processes — systems, tools, networks and platforms that involve users in the process of definition of the end product. The exhibition charts the migration of the epicentre of production from the factory floor to back to the craftsman's workshop. The title, Adhocracy, is a reference to the move away from the dominance of the bureaucratic model of organization, typical of the industrial era, towards an approach that embraces bottom-up innovation. The Adhocracy concept will be open to debate in panels and workshops to take place on the ground floor of the Galata Greek Primary School throughout the exhibition.

The Design Biennial will transform Istanbul into a city of design during two months, presenting an academy programme, workshop exhibitions, a seminar programme, film screenings, parallel participant programme, and design walks.

Organized in conjunction with the Audi Urban Future Initiate, the four-day conference Ideas City will feature a series of workshops, a lecture by New York City Planning Commissioner and Chair of the New York City Planning Commission Amanda Burden, and, on 18 October, the announcement of the winner of the second Audi Urban Future Initiative Award.
