Domus China, May 2017
The May issue of Domus China features a special section that focuses on typical projects of rural construction in contemporary Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Since the 1920s, the concept of rural construction has become a long-term theme of China’s development. Experienced with the Cultural Revolution in 1978, the Taiwan Political Transition in 1988 and the Return of Hong Kong in 1997, these three areas have internally changed in political and economic patterns. They inherited similar cultural traditions, but developed in totally different ways of rural renovation and construction, due to their divergence in social and geographical conditions.

In this issue we interviewed three architects – Fanhao Meng, Wang Weijen and Yongxing Chen – with their rural reformation projects in Hangzhou, Hong Kong and Taiwan – to examine their approach to the redesign and revitalization of those “forgotten” villages, as well as to explore the possibilities to preserve the rural land values under the impact of global urbanization.

The May issue also covers a chain of masterpieces of culture related buildings including Musée Régional de la Narbonne Antique in Narbonne, the New Central Library for the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, and the Visual Arts building of University of Iowa.

An ambitious project on the bank of the Seine – the Observatory and Insect Museum in Poissy – offers a modern interpretation of the 19-century French tradition of building garden follies in large parks. An old family tomb in Ivrea was transformed into a new and unusual space through an architectural approach, in which all of the construction features became art.
