“Double Double” – An exhibition transforms the NBA into an alternative art history

At the Conciergerie Contemporary Art Center, the exhibition “Double Double” reinterprets NBA imagery through 17 large-format works, connecting sports worship, collective memory, and sacred iconography.

At the Conciergerie Contemporary Art Center in La Motte-Servolex, France, the exhibition "Double Double" transforms the NBA into an alternative art history. The exhibition brings together 17 large-format works that ironically reinterpret masterpieces of painting through figures, symbols, and references to American basketball, creating a visual short circuit between sports culture, sacred iconography, and contemporary art.

A reflection on the modern cult of sports celebrities, the show brings into tension two seemingly distant systems—not only in the selection of images but also in the exhibition design itself, which amplifies these visual shifts between the sacred and the popular. Hardwood court flooring, rococo frames, and references to stained glass windows create an environment where religious language intersects with that of sport, blending contemporary idolization, collective devotion, and generational memory.
