The stand-out proposals presented by Pedrali at MDW include a Nym chair – by the young designer trio Cazzaniga Mandelli Pagliarulo – that revisits the traditional English Windsor seating but with a contemporary slant. An icon developed in hundreds of models, the Windsor chair was first developed by manufacturers of cartwheel spokes who applied them to the seat to produce the Windsor model. It was given this name because the producer was from Windsor and distributed them all over the UK. “The brief called for the development of a chair inspired by the Windsor model,” – explain the designers – “and the challenge was to come up with a convincing new model. We have succeeded thanks to technology developed by Pedrali, which has recently introduced new CNC machinery to the working of solid wood, making it possible to create spokes with an elliptical section for the Nym chair.” Unlike the reference model with round-section spokes, the flattened contours increase back comfort and creates a new standard for the Windsor chair.

More new ideas come from Patrick Jouin who has designed the Reva collection to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Salone Satellite, the French designer first having appeared at it in 1998. The most interesting feature of the line – comprising a sofa, armchair and bed all in extruded aluminium with textilene arms and back – is the versatility provided by a lounger that turns into a sofa when a back and arms are added.

Another presence is Patrick Norguet who in 2016 had come with Vic seating. Here, he again addresses the chair with his Fox design, an elegant seating collection that most notably features a shaped polypropylene body reinforced with fibreglass and set in a curved ash-wood trim, rounded at the ends.

The Pedrali proposal ends with a foray into the outdoor light world by Basaglia Rota Nodari. The name reflects the essence of the product mixing “Gira” – because the body revolves around a central axis– and “Volta” – in homage to Alessandro Volta. Made of plastic and extruded aluminium, Giravolta is a rechargeable outdoor light inspired by the lanterns of old.
