Architect Amandus Sattler visits the charismatic Vogelherd-site in Southern Germany. In this cave near a hilltop two small animal sculptures were excavated. The cute little mammoth and the wild horse are about 40.000 years old, made of ivory. The town of Niederstotzigen decided to emphasize the importance of this archeological find with an exhibition building. Young Munich-based office Ritter Jockisch Architektur won the competition and designed a ring-like shaped building which is perfectly integrated in the site's topography. It's an amazing example of architecture reacting and counteracting with the surrounding landscape.

A different approach can be seen in the very dramatic set of the Fogo Island Inn by Todd Saunders Architecture in Newfoundland. Here the setting is staged on the seashore. The project aims to provide a future for the small villages in the neighbourhood, whose inhabitants can't survive by fishing any more.

This issue of Domus also introduces the extension of the high school Hellerup in Copenhagen by BIG. Architect Bjarke Ingels was a former pupil there. He drew his inspiration from a mathematical curve that now forms the shape of the new gym's roof.

Sandra Hofmeister went on a pilgrimage to a small church by Michele De Lucchi, while Isabella Marboe explored the new Campus of the Wirtschaftsuniversität in Vienna. Eva Steidl followed the young designer Julia Lohmann on her experimental path: working with sea wood; Andrea Eschbach visited Swiss designer Moritz Schmid in his studio in Zurich; and Paola Antonelli investigated different approaches to organic design.
