Evgeny Morozov: “Cities have become a magnet for big technology investments and platforms”

At domusforum 2018, the sociologist and journalist who is an expert in new media talks about the critical role of the great technological giants in the development of cities.

Born in 1984 in Belarus, Evgeny Morozov is a sociologist and journalist expert in new media. Known for his critique of cyber-utopism, he studies the implications of technology on politics and society. He studied at the American University of Bulgaria and obtained a Phd in History of Science at the Harvard University. He collaborates with international newspapers and is a visiting professor at the Stanford University.

At domusforum 2018, he stated: “In the last few years what I have noticed in my own work is that cities have become increasingly a magnet for big technology investments and platforms and wherever you look in the globe you probably see some technology companies trying to make inroads into some big city”

“We are looking at an extremely centralised model where it’s just one American firm and one Chinese firm dominating the provision of many many services, that were not even imaginable five or ten years ago”

domusforum is a new cultural platform launched by Editoriale Domus to look at the impact of architecture, design and technologies on the urban environment. The first event focussing on the future of the city took place at the Franco Parenti Theatre in Milan on 11 October 2018. Among the speakers were Domus Editor in Chief Michele De Lucchi, Egyptian heritage advisor Fathi Saleh, and advocate for a politically and economically united Africa, Samia Nkrumah.
