Filament is the name of the trophy made by crystal designed by John Pawson for Fashion Awards 2017. The concept is intended to combine themes affiliated with both the fashion industry and architecture. A material ‘thread’ is cast at the centre of Swarovski crystal, each unique to the separate award winner’s trophy. A convex lens situated at the top of the piece, magnifies and distorts the thread on-end, read in contrast to the fine linear encapsulated band when viewed in elevation. Facets of graduating widths complement the pure cylindrical surface around the trophy’s body.  The palette of thread colours, equally distinct when seen apart as they are engaging as a collective, represent the diversity of 2017 award winners themselves. In Pawson’s words: “I wanted to design something reduced to its simplest possible form, in this case the cylinder - something you could hold in your hand - which I could then retune to use the inherent qualities of Swarovski crystal. The crystal cylinder encasing a lacquer ‘thread’ through its centre is partially faceted, with an oblique top featuring a lens. Its design means that all four sides provide a different view of the thread. The serendipitous aspect of the project is the way the finished piece refracts light”.
