Art along the river

Running from Nantes (which, according to Time magazine, is the city with the highest quality of life on the Old Continent) to Saint-Nazaire, an unusual art exhibition along the river has been organised by Jean Blaise, who came up with the idea for Paris’s all night event and is today director of “Lieu Unique”, one of France’s most active centres for art, set up in 2001 in an old biscuit factory.

Throughout the summer (from June 1 to September 1), around thirty pieces by thirty different artists will run along the course of the Loire for sixty kilometres. Some permanent, others short term, either above or below the water, visible from the banks or from the river, all the works invite the public to explore the fascinating river landscape, a setting that lies half way between fragile natural reserves and major industrial settlements.

To better appreciate the work, a boat has been organised (also transformed into a work of art by the collective La Valise) that will take visitors from an illuminated port installed by Yann Kersalé at Saint-Nazaire to the Île de Nantes where Daniel Buren and Patrick Bouchain have framed a double view towards the river estuary, passing alongside a huge yellow duck by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman. The aim of the event is to show that Nantes and Saint-Nazaire are not two distinct cities but a single metropolis in Brittany. The curators hope to repeat the event every two years. Elena Sommariva
