Light and welcoming, Siza’s hospital in Toledo

By 2010 the new hospital at Toledo should be ready. It has been designed by Álvaro Siza, born in 1933 and with a long and brilliant career already behind him it is however his first hospital project, created in such a way as to be comfortable and filled with natural light.

To fulfil this objective, “the architect simply has to imagine their own house inside a hospital” explained the Portughese architect, previous winner of the Pritzker prize. Leaving behind conventional and rigid notions of the hospital, his “will be surrounded in light and landscape”. Without neglecting though the challenge presented by technology which requires a highly flexible building in order to adapt to continual and necessary changes.

The building will cost around 270 million euro, the site covers 250 000 square metres and the floor area will cover 160 000 square metres, with 800 apartments and 1600 rooms.

This system turns the outdoors into a custom experience

A fully configurable structure, designed to blend seamlessly into the natural landscape while providing shelter from sun, wind, and rain.
It exists - it’s called CODE.
