Young bird kiosks

Opened as a collateral event of the By-City Biennale in Shenzhen, the five kiosks are the result of a competition that offers young Chinese architects to realize their projects.

The most notable feature of “Young Bird Plan” is that it focuses on implementation while the majority of other international competitions alike are confined to drawings design, and the contestants have a chance to be instructed by nine prominent Chinese mentors in their forties who have been committed to searching for and nurturing architects of younger generations.
Last but not least, the competition has long insisted on the principle that the jury members come from various design segments ever since the competition’s inception. The judges are commissioned to review the short-listed works from the perspective of decision makers in various sections of the industry chain. Their comments and final selections enable the contestants to realize that good works not only require excellent ideas, but also recognition by all such decision makers.

In 2014, Young Bird Plan received 1,091 entries submitted by 1,478 contestants from 201 colleges, universities and 220 design firms at home and abroad. Between 18th and 20th 2014, nine mentors gathered in Shekou and selected top 50 works after rounds of review. Then top 9 works were selected based on the natural conditions and cultural characteristics of the Prince Bay as well as the four selected locations. Afterwards, the mentors helped the finalists update their works one-to-one.

At the final stage, five groups of works with the highest scores stood out after prudent reviews by six judges with diverse backgrounds in different segments (including Yang Tianping, Stefano Boeri, Didier Fiuza Faustino, Nadim Karam, Angelo Azzolina and Yu Bing).

The top five works have recently been implemented and built in Shekou and open to the public, coinciding with the opening of the Shenzhen’s 2015 By-City Biennale of Urbanisme-Architecture.
