Domus Sri Lanka, March–April 2017
This issue of Domus Sri Lanka is a diverse collection of design and architecture stimuli ranging from the ancient to the futuristic. Keeping with the theme that seeks to highlight the importance of ‘Constant Learning’ in design, architecture and art, this issue brings you views from various personalities from across the world and from creations right here in Sri Lanka.

In the Projects section we feature the ZMAX Fairway Colombo, a city hotel constructed amidst the colonial precincts of Colombo Fort. While the exterior of the hotel strives to blend with the colonial architecture in the surroundings, the interior provides a unique personality to the hotel through bursts of colour and new-age interpretations of the area’s identity as a maritime hub during the height of the British Empire. Colombo Fort is today a Leisure and Shopping Hub, and thus, the hotel concept too complements this atmosphere rather than compete with it.

Also in the Projects section is featured the Le Cube, an unmistakably modern structure. A design derived out of Geometry and Glass, this office of Connaissance De Ceylan overcomes the challenge of limited space. Despite its truly modern structure, the interior complements with vibrant traditional Sri Lankan crafts that adorn the walls.

In the Feedback section we explore the aesthetic influence of Dambulla, which culminates at the Dambulla Rock Temple. Caves that have been occupied since the ancient Anuradhapura era, the arts and statues on display have been included here throughout the ancient kingdoms.

This issue, in the Projects section, Domus Sri Lanka also features the Sofitel Tamuda Bay in Morocco by the Beirut-based architect Galal Mahmoud. The design is a combination of cultures and eras; defined by the French Art of Living and inspired by Morocco’s artistic heritage the hotel is truly contemporary in design. Its interior and facilities are geared at catering to the traveller of today.

In the Confetti Section, we speak to Architect and Professor of Architecture, Madhavi Desai who recently authored the work “Women Architects and Modernism in India”. She discusses not only the contribution of women architects to the design industry, but also the struggle for equality within the industry.

Of the other international articles, we have included in this issue is the Design Museum in London, which has been redefined and renovated to offer the historic capital city of England a contemporary piece. Also featured is the beautiful Pirelli Factory where in 100 pictures the story of the Italian enterprise is showcased. In addition, there is a piece by Carlo Contin titled “If I Read I Forget, If I Look, I Remember, If I Do I Understand”, about a self-taught designer who transformed his family business along with his passion to explore new directions.
