Aquatic Benidorm

Manuel Alvarez Diestro depicts one of the most touristic spot in Spain, seen trough the eye of a tourist in the water, but some tension appears as the water seems to cover the skyscrapers.

Manuel Alvarez Diestro, Benidorm
This coastal city in the Mediterranean Sea, according to the Urban Age project, is home of the highest number of skyscrapers per capita in the world.

It is also the third most visited place in Spain. Interestingly enough, is proofed to be the most sustainable touristic town in the Mediterranean Coast as it receives 5 million tourists a year while occupying a very small chunk of land.

From London where I live I traveled like many British people to Benidorm and spend my holidays under the sun. Once over there, I decided to photograph the skyscrapers from the perspective of a tourist and enjoy its architecture while walking and swimming in the beach. I decided to create a surreal view of Benidorm by juxtaposing the skyline with the sea while I inter-played with the seawater.

I was interested to portray a new angle on how we perceive cities by this time from the perspective of the sea and the fun associated with the summer holidays. However, the series has an escalating tension as the sea seems to engulf the skyscrapers.
