220 km along the Piave

Multimedia and multidisciplinary project by Alessandro Mason, Alessio Guarino and Elisabetta Bianchessi, embracing the whole course of the River Piave, is a process of exploration, listening and vision, to ideally reconnect the whole river and go back in time.

La Piave is a project embracing the whole course of the River Piave – from Mt Sappada to Eraclea and Jesolo where it flows into in the Adriatic Sea. Although famous for its links to WWI, since antiquity the river has been a resource and forged the identity of the towns and areas that have developed along its route.

All this may now be forgotten but the water has a memory and an all-encompassing and unitary image of La Piave, as the river was known in olden times, can be made to reappear.

La Piave is a multimedia and multidisciplinary project involving landscape artists, architects, visual artists, video-makers, photographers, agronomists, botanists and biologists in a research/action team that will work with ten local administrations along the river’s course, responding to questions and unresolved issues posed by the natural and human habitats the river passes through, by the local communities and by the associations that keep it alive.

La Piave is a process of learning and exploration, listening and vision, an active workshop in which performative actions, installations and environmental projects (produced in collaboration with the partners) will take place kilometres away from each other and reference each other along the length of the river. The aim is to ideally reconnect the whole river, perhaps for just a moment, and go back in time, experiencing different approaches and tackling issues of primary importance for our relationship with nature, in a radical rereading of the river zone.

La Piave starts with an immersive workshop, “220 km”, which will construct a visual and material exhibition, at the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche, on the physical state of the river and its human habitat. This itinerant installation will travel around the Piave area (with the active collaboration of the local authorities participating in the project) and eventually, via the Microclima association, arrive in the Serra of the Giardini della Biennale for the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. La Piave is a permanent workshop in the field, a key bridge to the river’s celebrations, to be held from 2015 on to commemorate WWI.
