At the same time, the Victor Hunt Gallery inaugurates its additional exhibition space at the Lambert Crickx 16 venue in Anderlecht-Brussels. Born in Vigo, Spain in 1974, Tomás Alonso has been travelling since the age of 19 to pursue his career as a designer. He has been living, studying and working in the USA, Italy and Australia before moving to London to complete a MA at the Royal College of Art under Ron Arad in 2006. In 2006 he co-founded the design collective OKAYstudio with 5 other recent graduates from the RCA. His work has been widely published and exhibited, from the Design Museum, Aram gallery to the Whitechapel Gallery in London to exhibitions in Italy, Spain, France, Canada, and Japan. Alonso has been recently included in the permanent collection of the Design Museum in London. He has also received numerous international awards including the first prize in the Promosedia International Design Competition 2008 with his chair No.7

His practice is based in Stoke Newington, North East London, alongside the activities of the collective his work specialises in furniture, product, lighting, interior and exhibition design. The studio's clients include international producers of furniture and home wares such as Nils Holger Moormann, Teracrea or Italesse as well as selected design galleries and museums such as Next Level Galerie, Whitechapel Gallery, Design Museum, Spazio Rossana Orlandi, Commissaires Galerie, Matter New York or Phillips de Pury & Co. Currently he is working on interiors for Camper footwear stores. He combines his research and commercial design work with occasional teaching and workshops; most recently he has been teaching the product design Master course at ÉCAL in Lausanne, Switzerland. There is a strong human influence in Tomás´ work. He is interested in the relationship we have with objects and how these objects relate to us and other things around us. "For me it's important that what I design makes its way into people's hands and people's homes. I would like my objects to be used, lived with and enjoyed." He also experiments with different materials to make the most of their properties by finding new ways to create structure. The Mr. Light series, one of his more recent projects, continues with this exploration of structure and form by combining its materials in unexpected but very honest ways. "I would like to think that the products I design reflect on this very human way of living. They are not so much interventions in the home, but rather natural evolutions. I'd like my designs to appear simple, natural and almost obvious, but with a quirkiness. I think there is an underlined sense of functionality and romanticism that runs through all my work." "The story behind the work is definitely a very important starting point, but to me it is mostly that, a starting point. I think a good design involves a lot more than a good story. I think often designs are neglected in favour of a good story behind them, but in my opinion what lasts is the design itself and it should still work for its intended use—whether that is functional or to communicate an idea—even when the story is removed or forgotten." "My aim is still to keep working on different types of projects involving different materials, people, processes and contexts and to keep learning from all these experiences to apply to future projects and to life."
