Tile of Spain Awards: the winners

The winning projects, Auditorium of Algueña and Casa Collage, present a wide variety of uses for ceramic floor and wall tiles.

The jury of the Tile of Spain Awards for Architecture and Interior Design, chaired by the architect Benedetta Tagliabue, met last 17 November in Castellón to decide on the winners of the tenth edition of the Awards, widely recognised on the architecture circuit. This year's event rewarded a wide range of projects in which ceramic tiles demonstrate their ability to adapt to very different types of uses, and always in projects of major architectural importance. Two auditoria, a refurbishment project for a family home, a metro station in Barcelona and a children's school building were the award winners.

Prize Winners
The jury chose to award first prize in the competition in the architecture category to Estudio C O R (Miguel Rodenas and Jesús Olivares) for the project "MUCA. Auditorium and Music Complex" in Algueña (Alicante). The jury (composed by Benedetta Tagliabue, Andrés Jaque, João Álvaro Rocha, Mikko Heikkinen, Carlos Quintáns, Toni Grilo and Ramón Monfort) valued the intelligent use of the limited economic resources available and the expressive capacity of the iridescent ceramic tiling, which offers a different appearance with changing light conditions, and blends perfectly with the existing building and quarry. In the interior design category, first prize was awarded to the project Casa Collage in Girona's Call district, by bosch.capdeferroarquitectures (Elisabet Capdeferro and Ramón Bosch) In this case, the jury appreciated the poetic and intelligent use of the existing ceramic tiles. The way in which the tiles are used and combined offer an image full of optimism and in perfect harmony with the other materials.

End of Degree Project Category
The Tile of Spain Awards also have a category for the Best End of Degree Project by students in Architecture Schools in which ceramic tiles play a significant role. The jury agreed to award first prize to the project "MOSAIC. Thermal baths, hotel and restaurant in Bath, England" by Patricia Bouzas Pascual, a student at the Higher Technical School of Architecture in Madrid (ETSAM). From this project, the jury highlighted the fact that "it seems to have been designed based on the characteristics of ceramic tiles, with solutions ranging from the structural qualities through to the tactile qualities of the finishes, taking into account the pleasant texture of ceramic tiles in contact with water, and seeking an extraordinarily interesting relationship with light."

Due to the high quality of the projects presented to the competition, the jury agreed to grant three further consolation prizes for the following projects:
- "Support centre for economies at risk in the region of Kachchh (India)" by Erika Sanz García de from the Madrid Higher Technical School of Architecture.
- "Metropolitan Device System (Agricultural and Urban Recovery in La Vega de Granada)" by Carlos Gor Gómez from the Granada Higher Technical School of Architecture.
- "Museum of Visigothic Art in Mérida" by José Antonio Millán Mena, from the Madrid Higher Technical School of Architecture.
