Open House Rome: a weekend of architecture

This weekend, as the Italian capital opens the doors of more than 100 buildings in the first ever edition of Open House Rome, we unveil some of the spaces which will be open to the public.

On the weekend of 5 and 6 May 2012, the first ever edition of Open House Rome will take place, celebrating the architecture and design of Rome. For one weekend, the public is invited to explore the city's best architecture with a particular focus on contemporary design.

With a program coordinated by Davide Paterna and curated by Laura Calderoni and Alessia Vitali, Open House Rome 2012 will showcase more than 100 sites, open in four main areas of the city: the historical centre, including the Vatican City; the Parioli and Flaminio neighbourhoods, where the new Zaha Hadid museum MAXXI is located; the Tiburtina area, where a major reshaping of the urban landscape is currently ongoing; and the EUR district, home to some of the best 20th century buildings.

Open House Rome 2012 highlights will include tours to some of the new iconic buildings in Rome: on the construction site of the 'Cloud', the new Congress Centre by Massimiliano Fuksas, and the Tiburtina railway station, guided by architect Paolo Desideri from ABDR. The baroque masterpiece Santi Luca e Martina church, lying on the top of the most ancient senate house of the Roman Republic, will also be open to the public, as well as the Lincean Academy, one of the first academies of science in Italy, founded in 1603. The event will also open a number of buildings from the rationalist period, including the monumental Square Colosseum, designed as the icon of the 1942 world exhibition that never took place because of WWII.

The event follows the established Open House format of free access for all, with talks, tours and experts at the buildings.
