Der Schmuck Salon

A look at the work of the jewellery design department of Antwerp's St Lucas University College of Art & Design A news report from Rotterdam

Presented at Object Rotterdam 2012, Der Schmuck Salon was an installation displaying the work developed at the jewellry design department of Antwerp's St Lucas University College of Art & Design. The exhibit sought to display an atmosphere of atopia: a feeling that things are out of place, in unusual combinations. The domestic elements and jewellery pieces represented traces of a world that never existed and never will, but one that was still familiar.

"The materials and forms act as familiar, but at the same time they surprise us and fill the spectator with wonder," said department head Hilde De Decker. "They are abstracted images, indicating and suggesting a mental space. The mirrors, tables, cupboards and chairs, as well as the jewellery, are apparent elements of reality, referring to another reality. One might compare the domestic traces and jewellery with the building blocks of a still life: objects that are carefully arranged as an artistic stage, shifting away from real life."

Students represented included Sandra Buyck, Charlotte Van de Velde, Hervée Darmont, Margaux Claeys, Tibby De Volder, Ayla Kellens, Amélie Eder, Saskia Van der Gucht, Clarisse Bruynbroeck, Jelissa Alfaro Ponce, Paule Buschop, Kathleen De Bock, Elise Geers, Octave Vandeweghe, Robin Dehous, Lisa Van de Sande, Ashly Arnouts, Tiffany Corsten, and Shana Teugels.
